Residents of Baba Fateh Singh locality and the Sunam Nagar Council (NC) have been at loggerheads over garbage pits near the water tank in the area. Though residents razed the structures meant for garbage pits, the Nagar Council appears to be in no mood to change the location.
“Residents of our area have removed the pits as these were in residential area. These could have caused serious health problems. We have been opposing it since the start, but the authorities concerned are not ready to listen to us. We will not allow its construction at any cost,” said Harbhajan Singh, a resident of the area.
On Wednesday, residents converged at the site under-construction and demolished the structures.
A few days back, after getting information, area residents had submitted applications to the Executive Officer (EO) of the Sunam Nagar Council and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) to stop the work. They alleged that the officials started with their work without taking residents’ opinion. “We have been residing here for years. The Nagar Council authorities started the work near the water tank. We will not allow this,” said Shishan Dass, another resident.
Area residents announced to launch an indefinite protest if the authorities did not withdraw their proposal.
EO Sanjay Kumar said the police had been informed about the removal of the garbage pits. “These are being constructed for kitchen waste to be disposed of. These will not cause any problem,” said the EO.
Sunam Congress Halqa (area) in-charge Daman Thind Bajwa said, “The matter is in my knowledge and we are trying to sort it out with the consent of the area residents.”
