Students at the Government Middle School, Bharur, are forced to urinate in the fields as for 32 boys, the school has no toilet while for 25 girls, there is just one washroom.
Five more schools of Sunam subdivision do not have proper toilets and students face similar problems. Repeated requests of the school authorities for funds have fallen on deaf ears. “Our school is located on a busy road. It is always risky to go outside to urinate. Sometimes, stray dogs try to attack us,” said a Class VII student of Bharur.
Similarly, the Bharur Village Primary School has 79 students. The boys’ washroom has no door while the girls’ washroom has no drainage and water arrangements. At the Tunga Government Senior Secondary School, there are 244 students of which 131 are girls. But there are just two washrooms and they are without proper drainage and water facilities.
In a ray of hope, with the effort of AAP’s Sunam MLA Aman Arora, two NRIs from California Satnam Singh and Dr Gurinder have come forward and started the construction of toilets in six schools of Dhadrian, Buggran, Togawal, Ghasiwala, Bhrur and Tunga. In each school, both of them will spend Rs 1.25 lakh to construct toilets. Education Officer (Secondary), Sangrur, Harkanwaljit Kaur did not pick the phone despite repeated attempts.
