Week after Dalit’s killing, cops file chargesheet against four

The police today filed chargesheet in Jagmail Singh murder case. Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had, on November 18, directed the police to file chargesheet within a week.

“We have gathered the required evidence to substantiate the allegations of kidnapping of Jagmail Singh, his tying to a pillar and thrashing. After making a watertight case, we submitted the chargesheet in a local court today,” Sandeep Garg, Sangrur SSP, told The Tribune.

Jagmail had alleged that on October 27, he had a scuffle with some fellow villagers, but the matter was sorted after the intervention of elders.

But on November 7 when the victim was sitting at the residence of panchayat member Gurdial Singh, three accused Rinku, Beeta alias Binder and Lucky took him to their residence, where Rinku’s father Amarjeet was also present and he was thrashed mercilessly.

On November 13, the Lehra police registered a case against Rinku, Amarjeet Singh, Lucky and Beeta. Before his death on November 16, Jagmail told the police that the accused had tied him with a pole and thrashed him with sticks and an iron rod for around three hours. Later, another resident Laadi got him freed. The victim’s family members alleged that he was forced to drink urine when he demanded water.

After his death, the police added Section 302 IPC in the FIR and arrested all accused.

“Since the victim died, his statement that he was made to drink urine will be treated as his dying declaration,” said Garg.

Both DSP Ravinder Singh and SP Gurmeet Singh under the supervision of SSP Garg and Patiala Zone IG Jatinder Singh Aulakh prepared the chargesheet.

Though the police and doctors have been claiming that there was no delay on their part in the registration of FIR and treatment of the victim, the family is alleging that the officers concerned of both the departments did not act on time.
