A woman who drowned three of her children and attempted to commit suicide in a village near Hanumangarh (Rajasthan) was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court under Section 302 of the IPC on Saturday.
The court also sentenced her to one-year imprisonment under Section 309 for attempting to commit suicide.
Officials said Santosh Rani (32) had drowned her daughter Karuna (12), sons Aneesh (9) and Jitender (7) in a canal water reservoir located in a ‘dhani’ (cluster of houses) in Hamusar village on July 11, 2015.
She then jumped into the reservoir but was rescued by some villagers who came to know about the incident after a few hours.
During interrogation, she cited estranged relations with her husband Inderchand as the trigger for the extreme action.
The prosecution had produced 16 witnesses during the trial.
