Muktsar, November 3

It’s been almost a year since the previous SAD-BJP government organised the sixth World Cup Kabaddi-2016 but the winning and runners-up teams in both men’s and women’s categories are yet to get their prize money. The tournament was held from November 3 to 17 last year.

Further, with the change of guard in the state, the Congress government has decided not to hold the event from this year.

Amrit Kaur Gill, Director, Department of Sports, said, “We are not organising the kabaddi world cup this year as we can’t create more liabilities in the prevailing financial condition of the state. The prize money of last year is yet to be disbursed. We will give the money as soon as we get it.”

Then SAD-BJP government had announced Rs2 crore to the winner in the men’s category and Rs1 crore to the runner-up. In the women’s category, the government had announced Rs1 crore to the winner and Rs51 lakh to the runner-up.

SAD leader Sikander Singh Maluka, who is the president, Punjab Kabaddi Association, said, “The government should disburse the money as soon as possible or the winning teams may move the HC. It is their right to get the money. We are not in power now, so it is the duty of the present government to give the money.”
