Chandigarh, August 8

Organisations have demanded reservation in promotions for persons with disability in Chandigarh.

In a memorandum submitted to UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore, Parmdeep Singh Bhabat, president, Disabled Persons’ Welfare Organisation, Punjab, and Davinder Singh Saini, president, Persons with Disabilities Association, Chandigarh, stated that the Punjab Government provides 4 per cent reservation in promotions to employees of Class A, B, C and D categories and jobs on compassionate grounds to family member of the deceased government employee, but the UT Administration has not implemented these policies, which is against the interests of the disabled persons.

They also requested the Administrator to fill up the stock of Braille script books for visually challenged employees. Apart from this, they also brought to the notice of the Administrator the partial behaviour disabled persons were facing in various government offices. Citing an example of a 90 per cent disabled employee of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, who has been repeatedly transferred from one place to another, they alleged that able-bodied employees were posted on the ground floor, whereas disabled employees were posted on the higher floors and also allotted walking around duties.

They also requested to introduce audiology and speech therapy services at the GMCH-32. Seeking financial help for Satvinder Singh, who has been on ventilator support since July 24 at the GMCH-32, they said the patient was a victim of outbreak of diarrhoea at Bhabat village and comes from a poor family.
