Rohtak gets nation’s first boxing academy

The country’s first National Boxing Academy (NBA) commenced its operations at the Rajiv Gandhi state sports complex here today.
Sports Authority of India (SAI) Deputy Director Satish Kumar Sarhadi, who has been appointed chief operating officer (COO) of the National Boxing Academy, assumed charge today.
Talking to reporters on the occasion, Sarhadi, who has been transferred from Mumbai to Rohtak, said the academy would soon begin its sporting activities.
“The academy would train sportspersons for the state, national and international-level events. We will also organise national coaching camps for the Indian boxing team,” he maintained.
The chief operating officer said the academy had 120 seats of which 60 were for men and 60 for women.
Sarhadi said the preparations for selection of players, development of infrastructure and mess etc were already under way.
Sarhadi said the latest and advanced training modules would be employed to impart training to the players and one coach would be provided to 10 players.
Various certificate programmes related to different aspects of sports would also be started at the academy in due course, he added.
