New Delhi, May 6

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the release of Sahara group chief Subrata Roy from the Tihar Jail for four weeks to enable him to perform the last rites of his mother Chhabi Roy, who died in Lucknow on Thursday night.

A three-member Bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur granted parole to Roy on humanitarian grounds, but asked the Delhi Police Commissioner to depute policemen in plain clothes to accompany the 67-year-old beleaguered businessman to Lucknow.

Roy is in jail since March 4, 2014 for his companies’ failure to return about Rs 25,000 crore collected from small investors in the form of debentures later declared as illegal by stock market regulator SEBI and SC.
