The police have arrested the kingpin of a sandalwood smugglers’ gang after a chase of seven months. The gang was busted on September 5 last year.
The accused has been identified as Dayanand of Mangli village in Hisar district. He was today produced in an environment court in Kurukshetra and remanded in five-day police custody.
Jagjit Singh, police spokesperson, said on September 5, a special investigating team (SIT) of the Sonepat police had busted a gang of sandalwood smugglers with the arrest of five persons — Jitender of Sisana, Sheeshpal, Naresh and Neeraj of Kurukshetra and Udai of Nepal. The police also recovered 250 sticks of sandalwood worth Rs 5 crore from their possession. It was revealed during the interrogation that Jitender used to get the supply of sandalwood sticks from Dayanand.
