The process of disposing of a huge quantity of RDX, a deadly explosive, seized over the years, including during militancy, started today.
The explosive material, enough to destroy an entire town in case of an accidental explosion, was lying at the Beas police station.
A special team of the PAP Special Bomb Disposal Squad today reached the Beas police station and, in collaboration with the Army, took the explosives in their possession.
Later, it was taken to a nearby open military shooting range for executing the operation in the presence of DSP Lakhwinder Singh Mal of the Baba Bakala subdivision and SHO Mukhtiar Singh. As per officials, the whole lot of explosives would be destroyed in three days. Today, at least 50 rocket launchers, six anti-tank missiles, 50 hand grenades, anti-personnel missiles, huge quantity of RDX and gunpowder were disposed of safely.
Majority of these explosives, made in Russia and China, were smuggled in from Pakistan and aimed at disturbing the peace and tranquillity of the state.
Officials had written several times to the Central Ministry of Defence requesting to dispose of the RDX, but in vain.
The matter was expedited by SSP (Rural) Parampal Singh, who informed the DGP and initiated the disposal process with the permission of court.
