For the Indian team, the injury-induced loss of Shikhar Dhawan is irreparable; the blow is softened by the inclusion in the team of the young, dashing strokeplayer, Rishabh Pant.

After the announcement of Dhawan being ruled out was made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), India’s opener shared an emotional video on Twitter.

Dhawan revealed that his thumb fracture would not be able to recover in time for the games ahead. He shares how grateful he is for the love and support received from his teammates.

He wrote: “I feel emotional to announce that I will no longer be a part of #CWC19. Unfortunately, the thumb won’t recover on time. But the show must go on...I'm grateful for all the love & support from my team mates, cricket lovers & our entire nation. Jai Hind.”

He believes the show must go on.

The stylish left-handed batsman suffered the injury while facing Australia's Pat Cummins in India's second match of the tournament at the Oval on June 9.

Dhawan scored 117 runs in two matches in the tournament.

Dhawan carried on batting and scored a century to earn the man-of-the-match award as India beat the reigning champions by 36 runs.
