Chandigarh, February 22

The Congress suffered today its biggest loss in the present election to the Punjab Assembly in the defeat of the Chief Minister, Mr Gurmukh Singh Musafir, by a Communist in the Amritsar West Constituency.

The Congress needs at least 11 more seats out of the 14 the results of which are yet to be declared, to be in majority.

Out of the 104 Assembly seats the results of 90 have so far been declared and the Congress has got only 42 of them conceding 48 to the Opposition — 20 the Akali Dal (Sant), nine to the Jan Sangh, six to the Communists, two each to the Akali Dal (Master) and the Republican Party, eight to Independents and one to the SSP.

The election results of today saw many upsets.

The Irrigation and Power Minister, Mr Darbara Singh, the Health Minister, Mr Brish Bhan, the Finance Minster, Mr Mohan Lal, the Agriculture Minister, Mr Gian Singh Rarewala, and the Development Minister, Mr Prabodh Chandra were returned.

But the Congress also lost many important members. Mr Ajmer Singh, former minister, Giani Kartar Singh, Mr Harchand Singh and Dr Parkash Kaur, Deputy Ministers and Mr Gurbanta Singh, Former Minister, were defeated.
