The new Punjab Ministry headed by the State Congress (I) Chief, Mr Darbara Singh, will be sworn in at Punjab Raj Bhavan here at 11 am tomorrow.
Soon after he was unanimously elected leader of the State Legislature Congress (I) Party at the palatial Punjab Congress Bhavan today, Mr Darbara Singh received an invitation from the Governor and met Mr Jaisukhlal Hathi at Raj Bhavan at 1.15 pm. They are believed to have discussed the formation of the new government in the State.
Dr Kewal Krishan and Mr Santokh Singh Randhawa, both of whom have been again elected to the State Assembly, had earlier called on the Governor and informed him about the election of Mr Darbara Singh as the leader of the 63-member legislature Congress (I) party – the majority party in the 117-member House.
The name of Mr Darbara Singh at the Congress (I) party meeting was proposed by the member from Nabha, Mr Gurdarshan Singh. The proposal was seconded by several others, including Mr Darshan Singh Kaypee, Dr Kewal Krishan, Mr Sardari Lal Kapur and Mr Gurdial Saini. The meeting was attended by all the 63 new members and several party MPs, including Mr Sat Paul Mittal, and senior leaders like Mr Gurdial Singh Dhillon and Mr Harcharan Singh Brar.
Mr Bhishma Narain Singh, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, attended the meeting as the AICC (I) observer.
