AMBALA, Feb. 2.
Dr Gopichand Bhargava, former Chief Minister of the Punjab, has been defeated by Dr Ram Sarup, Congress nominee, from the two-member Butana constituency in Karnal district. The reserved seat in the Butana constituency has also been captured by the Congress nominee, Shri Phaggu Ram.
Dr Bhargava and three other contestants have forfeited their securities. Dr Gopichand polled 6,315 votes out of 57,784 votes with 1,13,000 as total electorate. Dr Ram Sarup polled 27,606 votes.
Dr Bhargava is also contesting from the Thanesar constituency (Karnal district), where counting of votes is scheduled to begin tomorrow.

Shri Prithvi Singh Azad, at one time right-hand man of Dr Gopichand, has been defeated from Rupar two-member constituency in Ambala district by an Akali candidate, Mr Pratap Singh. The general seat in Rupar, however, was won by the Congress nominee, Shri Rajindra Singh.
Today the Congress captured 10 seats out of 12, one seat having gone to the Akali candidate who defeated Shri Prithvi Singh Azad in Rupar two-member constituency.
The twelfth seat was won by a Communist.
The party position is: Congress 60; Akalis 4; Communists 5; Zamindara League 2 and Independents 4. Total 75.
