15-year-old Sikh girl to play for Malaysia

Fifteen-year-old Kirandeep Kaur of Malaysia is set to become the youngest player to represent her country at the upcoming Asian Games. Kirandeep, who started playing hockey when she was five after her father Gurdeep Singh introduced her to the sport, will also become the first Sikh girl to represent Malaysia.

She made her international debut in a six-nation tournament in Singapore in June, when she was still 14. Malaysia won the tournament and Kirandeep scored her first international goal in the final.

After first being selected in the senior national team, Kirandeep had told The Star Online that her childhood dream of playing for her country came true.

As Kirandeep's name was not in the original list sent to the Olympic Council of Asia by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation, the association had to request the Olympic body to add her name recently. — TNS
