Bopanna, Cuevas knocked out by Djokovic and Troicki

Rohan Bopanna and Pablo Cuevas yet again failed to click as a team, losing the closely-fought opening round of the ATP Indian Wells Masters to Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki 6-2 3-6 10-7 in one hour and six minutes. Leander Paes and Juan Martin del Potro are set to challenge Sam Querry and Gilles Muller in their opening round. In the men’s singles, France’s Stephane Robert defeated Israeli Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-4 to book a meeting with Roger Federer, while Briton Kyle Edmund will take on Novak Djokovic after a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Portugal’s Gastao Elias. Britain’s Daniel Evans cruised past German Dustin Brown 6-1, 6-1 to secure a meeting with Kei Nishikori of Japan. In the women’s singles, US teenager Kayla Day shocked Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 to earn a clash with Garbine Muguruza.

Real Madrid, Barca to play Clasico in America 

Real Madrid and Barcelona will travel to South Florida this summer to play their first-ever Clasico in the United States. The arch-rivals will lock horns on July 29 at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium as part of the International Champions Cup. It will be only the second Clasico played outside Spain, following a 1982 contest in Venezuela that ended in a 1-0 victory for Real Madrid.

Man City ease into FA Cup semifinals with 2-0 win 

David Silva and Sergio Aguero scored in each half as Manchester City became the first team to reach the FA Cup semifinals with a comfortable 2-0 win at Premier League rivals Middlesbrough on Saturday. A dominant City cruised into the last four after Silva gave them a third-minute lead and Aguero struck in the 67th minute, with the visitors missing numerous chances to win by a bigger margin. Pep Guardiola’s attacking formation, featuring Silva, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane behind Aguero, paid instant dividends as City carved open the home team’s defence. Yaya Toure fed Pablo Zabaleta on the right flank with a defence-splitting pass and the Argentine defender drove a perfect ball across the face of goal for Silva to shoot home from close range. Middlesbrough kept getting undone on either wing as Sane and Silva gave their markers a roasting and the home team’s goalkeeper Brad Guzan made a string of good saves.

Paulo Dybala struck a penalty at the death as defending champions Juventus overcame AC Milan 2-1 here to move provisionally 11 points clear at the top of the  Serie A football league. Dybala fired to the right of Milan’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 90+7th minute after Carlos Bacca (43rd) cancelled out Medhi Benatia’s 30th-minute opener. — Agencies
