Manchester, July 1
Injuries to Jasprit Bumrah and batsman Washington Sundar have ruled them out of the three-match T20I series against England that starts on Tuesday.
Bumrah sustained a fractured thumb on his left hand during India’s opening T20I match against Ireland last Wednesday and missed the following match. He will be replaced by Deepak Chahar for the England series. Bumrah is expected to be fit for the three-match ODI series against England starting on July 12. All-rounder Krunal Pandya has been named as Sundar’s replacement in the T20I squad, while Axar Patel will take the 18-year-old’s place in the ODI team.
Pandya, Dhawan sweat it out
All-rounder Hardik Pandya focussed on bowling slower deliveries while opener Shikhar Dhawan tackled short-pitched throwdowns during the Indian team’s first net session at Old Trafford on the eve of their three-match T20I series.
With Bumrah being ruled out of the T20I series, Bhuvneshwar Kumar will have to shoulder the additional responsibility in the slog overs. The Indian team management will therefore expect Pandya to be a bit more economical and hence try out more variations against the likes of Jason Roy, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow.
Pandya spent a considerable time bowling to Rohit Sharma. He was seen mixing slow off-cutters with his usual length deliveries. Dhawan took throwdowns with a heavy plastic ball in order to counter the extra bounce. He then perfected the pull shots against the tennis-ball throwdowns. — Agencies
