Ludhiana, December 16
Andaman and Nicobar’s Essaw broke the 19-year-old national record on his way to winning the gold medal in the U-14 boys’ 500m time trial event of the National Track Cycling Championship at the PAU velodrome here today.
Essaw clocked 35.979 seconds to better Kulbir Singh’s mark of 36.11s, which was also set in Ludhiana 19 years ago.
Man Singh Chandi of Rajasthan won the silver and Y Rojit Singh of Manipur bagged the bronze.
The championship kicked off with Punjab’s Sahil Sharma winning the 10km scratch race in the U-18 men’s category. Dev Kishan Saran of Rajasthan won the silver and Abhiraj K bagged the bronze.
In the U-18 women’s 6km scratch race, Kerala’s Nayana Rajesh P raced to gold, while H Bedana Devi of Madhya Pradesh won the silver. Shushikala Agashe of Maharashtra won the bronze medal.
Anandhu A of Kerala bagged the gold medal in the U-16 boys’ 5km scratch race. Raju Bati won the silver and JK Aswin of Tamil Nadu won the bronze. Megha Gugad of Karnataka won the 4km scratch race in the U-16 girls’ category, while Vaishnavi Gabane of Maharashtra bagged the silver medal and Alena Reji won the bronze.
In the U-14 girls’ 500m time trial event, N Anita Devi of MP won the gold medal, clocking 44.002s, while Danamma Chinchakhandi of Karnataka bagged the silver and Pallavi Dhanawade of Maharashtra won the bronze.
In the men’s elite 15km scratch race, Karnataka’s Krishna Nayakodi won the gold medal, Satbir Singh of SSCB won the silver and Jetha Ram Gat of Rajasthan bagged the bronze.
In the women’s elite 10km scratch race, Lidiyamol M Sunny of Kerala bagged the gold, while T Monorama Devi of MP won the silver and Rejani V of Kerala won the bronze.
