Mumbai boy Prithvi Shaw smashed 89 runs while skipper Abhishek Sharma produced an all-round performance as India trounced minnows Malaysia by 235 runs in the opening encounter of the U-19 Asia Cup. Opting to bat, India colts scored 289/8, thanks to three half-centuries by Shaw, Sharma and Het Patel. India got off to a solid start with Shaw and Himanshu Rana scoring 89 for the first wicket and then Shaw and Sharma gathering 74 for the third. Malaysia, in reply, were bundled out for 54 in 22.3 overs, with Kamlesh Nagarkoti grabbing 4/12 and Sharma 2/9. Brief scores: India 289/8 (Prithvi Shaw 89, Abhishek Sharma 59, Het Patel 58); Malaysia 54 in 22.3 overs (Kamlesh Nagarkoti 4/12, Abhishek Sharma 2/9)

Gurpreet leads armymen's sweep in 25m rapid fire pistol

Olympian Gurpreet Singh led an Army Marksmanship Unit's (AMU) clean sweep in the finals of the men's 25m rapid fire pistol event at the 60th National Shooting Championship Competitions here today. Gurpreet topped the qualifying stage with an aggregate of 579 and then went on to shoot a score of 35 in the six-man final. Teammate Neeraj Kumar, who shot 29, took the silver while former Olympics silver medallist Vijay Kumar bagged the bronze with a score of 24.

India lose to Uruguay in U-17 football meet   

The India U-17 football team went down to Uruguay 1-2 in their last match of the round-robin stage match in the Atletico Paranaense U-17 International Tournament. It was India's third straight defeat in the tournament. After conceding two goals on either side of the break, Komal Thatal halved the difference but the gritty Uruguayan defence held on till the final whistle. — Agencies
