Former India U-19 captain Ishan Kishan, mentored by none other than MS Dhoni, provided a glimpse of his talent with a power-packed 86 off 61 balls that helped Jharkhand beat Haryana by five wickets and make it to their maiden semifinals of the Ranji Trophy.

Chasing a target of 176, Jharkhand knocked off the required runs in just 30.2 overs with Kishan hitting nine boundaries and six sixes in his breezy knock.

While Kishan, who now has 719 runs to his credit in this season, finished the game with a flourish, left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem (4/78) and leg-spinner Samar Quadri (3/75) were instrumental in dismissing Haryana for 262 in their second innings.

Haryana lost their last eight wickets for 116 runs. It was a phase of just nine overs, between 62nd and 71st overs, that actually pushed Haryana out of the contest — they lost five wickets for just 15 runs in this brief period. From a commanding 178/2, they slipped to 193/7 and eventually folded up for 262.

Chaitanya Bishnoi (52) and Shivam Chauhan (43) added 87 runs for the third wicket before Chauhan was caught by Ishank Jaggi off Nadeem. The dismissal triggered a collapse as Rajat Paliwal (2) was the next to go in an identical manner, caught Jaggi bowled Nadeem. Bishnoi was caught by substitute Pratyush Singh off medium-pacer Kaushal Singh, followed by RP Sharma (0) and Amit Mishra (0) in quick succession.

With nearly 40 overs and a day’s play left, Jharkhand could have taken it easy but the young Kishan had other ideas. He was ready to take the aerial route against leg-spinners Yuzvendra Chahal (2/43 in 7.2 overs) and Amit Mishra (0/32 in 4 overs). Skipper Mohit Sharma, who seems to have lost some sting in his bowling, was pulled disdainfully and driven with ferocity as he was smashed for 24 in 3 overs.

Mumbai on brink of victory

Raipur: Left-arm spinner Vijay Gohil picked a five-wicket haul to put Mumbai on the brink of victory against Hyderabad here today. Gohil returned figures of 5/28 to leave Hyderabad reeling on 121/7, still 111 runs short of the target. Pacer Abhishek Nayar also bowled well for Mumbai, fetching figures of 2/27 off 14 overs.
