Kohli announces Rs 2 crore scholarships to sportspersons
New Delhi, September 8
Virat Kohli has pledged Rs 2 crore annually to fund the training, equipment and exposure needs of Olympics and non-Olympics sportspersons in India through his charitable foundation.
Describing what he called as “my way of giving back to the sports which made me what I am today", Kohli announced a scholarship for deserving sportspersons on Friday. Kohli's charitable institution — Virat Kohli Foundation — today entered into a partnership with the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group to identify and support athletes and award them scholarships. The joint venture will organise an award function — Indian Sports Honours — in Mumbai on November 11. Performances by the Indian athletes in four team sports and 20 individual sports from August 1, 2016 to July 31, 2017 will be considered for the awards.
The Sports Journalists Federation of India (SJFI) and an advisory council headed by chief badminton coach Pullela Gopichand would be researching the performances of athletes and collate the information to shortlist the nominees in each of the awards categories. — TNS
