Moores sacked after Andrew Strauss takes ECB job

England coach Peter Moores (in pic) has been sacked after former captain Andrew Strauss was appointed as the new national director of cricket. Moores was relieved of his duties following a dismal World Cup and the drawn Test series with West Indies. The 52-year-old, who also coached England from 2007-2009, said: “I will walk away knowing I’ve given my all.”

Yuki wins first doubles title of 2015 season
Yuki Bhambri clinched his first doubles title of the season with partner Adrian Menendez-Maceiras, following a nerve-wracking win in the rain-hit final of the ATP Challenger event. The unseeded Indo-Spanish pair was trailing 5-7 1-1 against the second pair of Sergey Betov and Mikhail Elgin when the skies opened up yesterday and the final was rescheduled. Yuki and Adrian were down a break point in the second set when the match began but they held their nerves and went on to win the final 5-7 6-3 10-8 in one hour and 23 minutes.

India face Malaysia test in Sudirman Cup on Monday
A strong Indian badminton team led by Saina Nehwal and K Srikanth will start its campaign in the prestigious Sudirman Cup with a clash against Malaysia in Group 1D. India, who reached the knockout stage of the biennial tournament in 2011, have been clubbed with Malaysia and Korea. A world mixed team championship, Sudirman Cup will have five matches in every round, including three doubles — men, women and mixed.

Spanish GP: Rosberg ends Hamilton’s pole run
Nico Rosberg denied world champion Lewis Hamilton a fifth pole position in a row by seizing the top slot for Mercedes at the Spanish Grand Prix on Saturday. Hamilton, who leads the German in the Formula One standings by 27 points after three wins in four races, lost out for the first time this season and had to settle for second on the starting grid. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel will line up in third place.

Sunderland beat Everton to climb out of bottom three
Sunderland climbed out of the Premier League’s bottom three and applied heavy pressure to the teams fighting for survival around them with a gritty 2-0 victory at Everton on Saturday. Danny Graham put Sunderland ahead after 54 minutes when the striker was in the right place to deflect Jordi Gomez’s shot past Tim Howard and record his first goal for the club he joined over two years ago. — Agencies
