Priyanka stuns cousin Babita, wins gold

New Delhi, December 31 

Priyanka Phogat emerged as the surprise package on the final day of the senior wrestling Nationals, taking down CWG champion Babita Kumari on her way to the gold medal in the women’s 55kg category.

Priyanka stunned her cousin Babita, a World Championships bronze medallist, in the semifinals before going on to beat Archana Tomar in the final. Babita had to be satisfied with the bronze medal along with Sakshi.

Railways finished on top of the podium in the men’s freestyle section, while Haryana emerged triumphant in the women’s freestyle. In the Greco-Roman section, Services were the winners.

In the women’s 75kg category, Kiran won the gold, while Nikki took the silver. Pooja and Jyoti settled for the bronze. In the men’s 86kg, Somveer defeated Gopal Yadav to walk away with the gold. Naresh and Pawan managed to end with the bronze medal.

In the 125kg category, Sumeet got the better of Mandeep to win the gold, while Gurusai and Krishan Kumar were the two bronze medallists. — PTI
