Ropar, November 11

It was not easy for Amritpal Kaur to allow her daughter Jasmeen Kaur to pursue shooting. Amritpal feared she did not have the monetary means to help her daughter pursue such an expensive sport. She did not have much support either. Amritpal lost her husband in 2010.

However, Jasmeen’s passion for the sport and support from her coach at the school helped change Amritpal’s mind. On Saturday, Jasmeen made her mother proud by clinching a gold medal at the 14th Asian Shooting Championship in Doha, Qatar. Jasmeen shot 248.7 points to win the gold medal in the youth girls’ 10m air rifle category. “She not only made me proud but the whole nation proud,” Amritpal said of her daughter.

Jasmeen is a Class XI student at the Government Senior Secondary School at Jhallian Kalan village in Ropar district. She is pursuing the medical stream. Jasmeen won five medals, including two gold, in the 62nd National Shooting Championship in Kerala last year. She won a silver medal in the Khelo India Youth Games in Pune in January. The Union Sports Ministry awarded her an annual stipend for eight years.

Jasmeen’s school has produced five national-level medalists in the last six years. The credit goes to ex-serviceman Harjit Singh, who is now a senior laboratory attendant at the school, and Punjabi teacher Narinder Singh. They train 12 students at the school, and, interestingly, 11 are girls.
