Russia’s Zaripova stripped of London steeplechase gold
ZURICH: Russia’s Yuliya Zaripova has been stripped of the gold medal she won in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase at the 2012 London Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Monday. Zaripova, who tested positive for turinabol, was among 12 athletes, including seven medallists, who were disqualified from their events following re-testing of samples, the IOC said. Zaripova had been widely expected to lose the medal after she was banned for two-and-a-half years by Russian anti-doping agency RUSADA in January 2015 after her biological passport showed abnormalities.

EPL: Chelsea take over at the top
Chelsea replaced Liverpool at the top of the Premier League with a comfortable 1-0 win at Middlesbrough thanks to a first-half Diego Costa strike on Sunday. It was the London side’s sixth successive league victory without conceding a goal and put them on 28 points from 12 games, a point ahead of the Merseyside club and Manchester City. The league’s leading scorer, Costa, hit his 10th goal of the season to put them in front four minutes before the break. ‘Boro, promoted last season, found it hard to make any clear opportunities against a solid Chelsea defence and remain in the bottom six, one point clear of the relegation places. — Reuters
