Saroha wins gold in record breaking performance

Indian para athlete Amit Kumar Saroha won a gold medal in the men's club throw (F-51) at the recently concluded 2016 French Open Athletics Championship in Paris. The Arjuna Awardee from Haryana broke the Asian record, which he had set himself at last year's World Championships in Doha, with a throw 26.58m. Saroha has already qualified for the 2016 Rio Paralympics, scheduled to be held this September.

Joshna in semis, Dipika loses in quarters    

Joshna Chinappa defeated Rachael Grinham to secure a place in the semifinals while Dipika Pallikal lost in straight games against top-seed Joelle King in the PSA HKFC International squash tournament here today. Chinappa won a close first game. She faced no problem whatsoever in the second game, but lost her way in the third and fourth. The third seed, however, bounced back to win the decider for a 15-13, 11-6, 6-11, 9-11, 11-4 win. Pallikal was outplayed by Joelle of New Zealand 8-11, 6-11, 8-11 in the quarterfinals.

Aditi misses out on US Open berth          

Aditi Ashok put in a superb effort in the second round of the 2016 US Women's Open Championship Qualifying event, but still fell short of making the grade for the US Open here today. The 18-year-old shot 76 and 70 to total a two-over 146 in the 36-hole European Sectional Qualifier in England. Aditi finished T-14 among the 73 players who teed off for the qualifiers.

Bangar named coach for Zimbabwe tour

Former India and Railways all-rounder Sanjay Bangar was today named coach for the national cricket team's upcoming tour to Zimbabwe. Bharat Arun and R Sridhar, who were part of the support staff along with Bangar under Ravi Shastri, have been ignored. Abhay Sharma, a former first-class cricketer, has been appointed as the fielding coach.

Man United appoint Mourinho as manager

Manchester United have appointed Jose Mourinho as their new manager, Sky Sports News reported on Thursday. The 53-year-old Portuguese replaces Dutchman Louis van Gaal whose two-year reign at Old Trafford ended on Monday, two days after United lifted the FA Cup. — Agencies
