Sehwag hits form after retirement

Virender Sehwag celebrated his retirement from international cricket with a scintillating ton for Haryana on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka here today. Jayant Yadav, too, smashed a ton to take Haryana to 319/8 at the close of the day’s play.

Sehwag, who announced his retirement on Tuesday, entertained the spectators with a strokeful 136 off 170 balls, hitting 16 fours and three sixes. He stitched a 206-run stand with Yadav (100) for the third wicket to put Haryana in the driver’s seat.

Defending champions Karnataka, though, struck back by bagging five wickets for just 54 runs in the final session. Sharing the new ball with captain Vinay Kumar, HS Sharath led the charge with a hat-trick to end the day with an impressive 4/47.

Arriving at the crease after the fall of Rahul Dewan (9), Sehwag quickly got into his groove and executed some of his trademark shots en route his fine hundred.

Shrivastava hits ton

Patiala: Riding on Aditya Shrivastava’s unbeaten ton and Jalaj Saxena’s half-century, Madhya Pradesh reached 251/5 against Punjab at the draw of stumps on Day One here today.

Openers Shrivastava and Saxena gave their team a brilliant start as they amassed 152 runs for the first wicket. Shrivastava’s unbeaten innings (105) came off 267 deliveries, studded with six fours and a six.

For Punjab, Sarabjit Ladda (2/62) and Pargat Singh (2/75) took two wickets each.

Rasool, Manhas star for J&K

Agartala: Mithun Manhas (96) and Parvez Rasool (129no) helped Jammu and Kashmir reach 303/4 on Day One against Tripura in a Group C match. All-rounder Rasool ended up hitting 18 fours and three sixes while captain Manhas struck 13 fours in his 192-ball knock. Manisankar Muraisingh and Rana Dutta shared two wickets each.

Kamat frustrates HP

Dharamsala: Sagun Kamat scored an unbeaten 124 as Goa reached 265/7 against Himachal Pradesh on the opening day of their match here today. All-rounder Rishi Dhawan picked up a five-wicket haul to trigger a top-order collapse. — Agencies
