Silver for Deepa Malik
Rio de Janeiro: India’s Deepa Malik on Monday created history by becoming the first woman from the country to win a medal at the Paralympics when she bagged a silver in the shot put F-53 event here. Deepa’s best throw of 4.61m from her six attempts was enough to clinch the silver. India now have secured three medals.
Deepa is a paraplegic, paralysed from the waist down. A mother of two, she is the wife of an Army officer. Life took a twist when a spinal tumour made walking impossible for her 17 years ago. The spinal tumour had to be operated upon and 31 surgeries were conducted. Besides shot put, Deepa has participated in javelin throw, swimming and has been a motivational speaker. From Sonepat and residing in Gurgaon, she will receive Rs 4 crore under the Haryana Sports Scheme. — PTI
