They say all the right things, they make all the right moves. Yet, more often that one might expect, revered celebrities show the obnoxious sides of their character.

The first thing that greets your eye when you open a local newspaper is the photograph of Glenn McGrath, the great Australian fast bowler, holding a gun, posing in front of the carcass of an elephant. It is ugly and shocking.

Yesterday, Dale Steyn, the South African fast bowler, had written invective-laden words for murderers of a rhino.

Photographs in the Australian newspapers also show McGrath pose with other killed animals, like a dead deer. These pictures were taken in 2008 during a safari in Zimbabwe. McGrath said in a statement that the safari was legal.

The emergence of the horrible photos made McGrath react on twitter. “In 2008 I participated in a hunting safari in Zimbabwe that was licensed and legal but in hindsight highly inappropriate. It was an extremely difficult time in my life and looking back I deeply regret being involved,” McGrath said.

Did he regret being involved, or did he regret the fact that these photographs have emerged?
