700 students take part in traditional games

Dehradun, November 5

A sports event to promote the traditional games of Uttarakhand was organized here today. Around 700 students from different schools took part in the event and learned the skills of the traditional games such as Bagh Bakri, Pitthu, Fuksal, Murga Jhapat and Batti.

“The aim of the event was to choose a traditional game, which could be added to the list of the National Games of 2018. On the other side, this will also help youths to connect with their roots,” said Anand Rawat, organiser of the event. The theme of the event was to divert young minds towards sports instead of drugs, he added.

Pitthu: This game is played with a ball made of rubber and cloth by two teams having six players each.

Murga Jhapat (cock fight):

1- Teams having six players each participate in the game.

2- A player each from all teams compete with each other by holding their legs.

Footsal:

1- This a football like game and each team has six players.

2- Players can’t play aerial shots.

Bagh Bakri (tiger and goat):

1- This is a board game like chess.

2- Players are bifurcated in teams of tiger and goat.

Batti:

1- Two players play his game with five small stones.

2- A player has to pick all stones by throwing one stone into the air and catch it again.
