Chandigarh, January 6

In a close contest, international master Himanshu Sharma of the Railways emerged the champion with 7½ points in the open category on the concluding day of the First Chitkara International School Open FIDE Rating Chess Championship  held at Chitkara International School  located in Sector 25 (West).

Himal Gusain from SD College, Sector 32, Chandigarh, finished runners-up with 7½ points on the basis of a tie-breaker while Ram S Krishnan of Tamil Nadu, who also secured 7½ points, claimed the third spot on the basis of strategy on board. 

In the below 1600 FIDE ratings category, Sankalp Arora lead to bag the top honours with 8 points, while Aryan, who also scored 8 points, secured the second position vide a tie-breaker.  Mangal Prasad, with 7½ points, secured the third spot in the championship.

A total of 302 players, including 160 with international ratings, participated in the event. The winners were awarded cash prizes along with certificates of merit.
