Chandigarh, January 10
Jalandhar beat Chandigarh by one run in the super over to win the opening match of the Punjab State Inter District T20 Tournament at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, here today.
Set a target of 185 to win, Jalandhar equaled the score in the stipulated quota of overs, forcing the match into super over.
In the super over, Jalandhar scored 22 runs off Arpit Singh with Himanshu Satyawan and Abhishek Gupta scoring 11 runs each.
In reply, Gaurav Puri scored 20 runs off 5 balls after Jaskaran Singh managed a single of the first ball off Rishab Bhagat's over; the hosts losing the match by one run.
Earlier electing to bat, Chandigarh skipper Manan Vohra and Sarul Kanwar put on 20 runs for the opening wicket before Kanwar holed out to Abhishek off Pargat for 7.
Vohra and Jaskaran stretched the total to 61. However, the 41-run stand between the two ended when the skipper was found short by an accurate throw from Rahul. Vohra scored 35 off 34 balls, including five boundaries.
Jaskaran and Gaurav Puri stitched 55 runs for the third wicket before the former was caught by Mansab Gill off Bhagat for 35 (31 balls)
Puri though was in a belligerent mood, smashing 46 runs off just 19 balls. His stay at the crease was cut short by Pargat Singh, but not before he struck six huge sixes.
Gaurav Sharma smashed 36 off 13 balls, while Bhagmender struck 20 off 9 balls to stretch the total to 184. The duo scored unbeaten 56 runs for the fifth wicket in just 3.1 overs.
For Jalandhar, Pargat Singh claimed 2/40, while Bhagat grabbed 1/46.
Needing 185 runs for victory, Mansab Gill and Pargat Singh scored 54 runs in just 4.5 overs to provide a solid platform to the Jalandhar innings.
The partnership ended when Singh was caught by Gaurav Puri off Gaurav Gambhir for 40 off 19 balls.
Gill, meanwhile, hammered 76 off 51 balls to keep Jalandhar in the hunt before Satyawan and Gupta added 33 runs in just 10 balls to level the scores.
Satyawan remained unbeaten on 29, while Gupta scored 9 off 4 balls. For Chandigarh, Gambhir took 2/41. Bhagmender returned with figures of 1/41.
Amritsar beat Mohali
In the second match at the PCA Stadium in Mohali, Amritsar beat the hosts by four wickets.
Amritsar, after electing to field, restricted Mohali to 160/7 in 20 overs as Kamal Passi, Navneet Virk and Vinay Chaudhary claimed two wickets apiece to put a tab on the scoring rate.
Opener Shubman Gill hit 52 off 40 balls, while Ramandeep Singh smashed 55 off 39 balls to lay a solid foundation, but Gurkeerat Mann (5), Mayank Sidana (2) and Jaskaran Singh (7) failed to capitalise as Mohali finally ended up scoring 160/7 in their quota of overs.
In reply, Amritsar openers Mohit Handa and Shivluv struck 52 runs in 7.3 overs before the latter was caught by Ramandeep Singh off Varun Khanna for 18.
Khanna struck again, trapping Handa in front of wickets for 33 off 29 balls.
Sharad Lumba (43 off 34 balls) and Navneet Virk (24 off 15 balls) then ensured the team reach the target with four wickets to spare. Rohan Marwaha scored 13 runs off 4 balls. For Mohali, Jaskaran Singh claimed 3/45, while Varun Khanna took 2/ 18.
Patiala drub Ludhiana
Patiala, meanwhile, drubbed Ludhiana by nine wickets in the final match of the day at the PCA Stadium.
Batting first, Ludhiana were bowled out for 98 runs in 19 overs. Beant Singh claimed 3/12, while Sanvir Singh (2/23) and Rajwinder Gollu (2/14) grabbed two wickets each.
For Ludhiana, opener Talwinder Singh scored 43 off 30 balls. Nikhil Chaudhary contributed 26 runs to the total.
In reply, Patiala scampered home in 11.2 overs with openers Jeevanjot Singh and Ravi Inder Singh putting on 88 runs in 9.1 overs.
Inder was cleaned up by Rahul Khanna for a blistering 30-ball 66.
