Local carrom player Nidhi Gupta bagged the title of 42nd Sub-Junior National Carrom Championship, concluded on March 15, in Akola (Maharashtra).
Nidhi, a student of St Mary’s School, Sector 46, emerged national champion while Sanya Chadha, a student of Hall Mark School, Sector 15, Panchkula, claimed runners-up spot in the championship. In the league stage of her title run, girls’ singles event, Nidhi outclassed Seema from Chhatisgarh 21-00 and 21-00, Muskan from Uttar Pradesh 21-00 and 21-00, Mohanambigai of Tamil Nadu 21-00 and 18-04.
In the quarter-final round, Nidhi beat Mohanambagi of Tamil Nadu 18-04 and 20-04 while in the semi-finals Nidhi overpowered P Dharani of Tamil Nadhu in straight games 10-08 and 12-03.
In the final, Nidhi contested with her batch mate Sanya. The title winner lost the first game to Sanya 09-15 but bounced back, in the second game, and registered win 16-08. In the third game, Nidhi kept her calm and defeated Sanya 17-08 to claim her maiden national title.
Sanya in her league matches defeated Priyanka of Andhra Pradesh 21-00 and 21-03, Harijati Singh of Uttar Pradesh 17-06 and 15-00. In the quarterfinals she defeated Anjali Keshari of Uttar Pradesh 21-00 and 16-12 while in the semi-final Sanya thumped down K Gayathriga from Tamil Nadu 21-01 and 12-04.
In the girls’ team championship, the Chandigarh side attained runners-up spot after going down against Tami Nadu 1-2.
In the final, Sanya defeated Snekaprabha 13-08, 10-13 and 17-12 while Nidhi lost to P Dharani 02-21 and 14-17. In the last game, Chandigarh’s Komal and Aakanksha went down against Snekaprabha and P. Dharani 04-21 and 01-21.
