Param, Paramveer in doubles final

Chandigarh, December 10

Second seed Param Pun and Paramveer Bajwa defeated top seed pair of Vilasier Khate and Ranjeet Singh, 6-4, 6-2, to bag the title of boys (doubles) category at the CLTA-AITA Shivalik Public School Men’s and Women’s (Rs. 1 lakh ) Tournament here today.

In the women’s doubles final, the top seed pair of Gayatri Kumaraiah and Shenaz Singh defeated the second seed Ishwari Seth and Aarushi Kakkar. The match was decided in the final set super tiebreaker. After losing the first set at 4-6, Gayatri and Shenaz came back strongly to win the next set, 6-0. They had a match point at 9-8 but their rivals managed to survive the scare. Gayatri and Shenaz won the next two points (11-9) to lift the title.

In the men’s singles semifinal, top seed Manish Kumar defeated third seed Paramveer Bajwa

7-6(5), 6-0. Manish took a commanding lead with 5-2 in the first set but Paramveer came back strongly to level the game at 5-5. In the 11th game, Paramveer made some unforced errors to give Manish a 6-5 lead. After saving two set points, both were tied at 6-6. Manish maintained the momentum of his game forcing Paramveer to make some unforced errors and lose the tiebreaker, 5-7. In the second set, Manish bagged laurels without conceding a game to enter the finals.

He will be facing sixth seed Suraj Beniwal, who defeated Param Pun in another semifinal, 6-2, 6-0.

In the women’s category, eighth seed Nidhitra Rajmohan upset top seed Neeru Raparia in the semifinal. In another semifinal, unseeded local girl Aarushi Kakkar upset second seed Aarushi Bhasin. After losing the first set at 5-7, Aarushi Kakkar won the next two comfortably, 6-2 and 6-3.
