Paramveer, Param bag men’s doubles title

The pair of Paramveer Bajwa and Param Pun defeated Ankit Chopra and Ranjeet Singh to bag the men’s doubles title while top seed Anjali Thakur and Arushi Bhasin defeated Sahan Shetty and M Arthi to win the women’s doubles title during the final of the ongoing ‘The Tribune Cup’ National Ranking Championship Rs 2 Lakhs for Men’s and Women’s Tennis Tournament being played at the CLTA courts in Sector 10, here, today.

In the men’s doubles category final, the unseeded winning pair beat superior seed Ankit Chopra and Ranjeet Singh 7-6(4) and 7-5.

In the women’s doubles final, top seed Anjali Thakur and Arushi Bhasin defeated Sahan Shetty and M Arthi. The match was decided in the final set super tie-breaker. Anjali Thakur and Arushi Bhasin won the title 3-6, 6-3 and 10-6.

In the men’s singles category, former Davis Cup player VM Ranjeet moved into the final of the championship after defeating 4th seed Ranjeet Singh of the CLTA by conceding only three games in the semi-final. VM Ranjeet used his experience and made a few unforced errors. Ranjeet won the game at 6-2 and 6-1. Unseeded Paramveer Bajwa upset 2nd seed Sidharth Vishwakarma in three sets.

Paramveer lost the 1st set in a tie-breaker but he came back strongly to win the next two sets by conceding only five games. Paramveer used a good shot selection to upset Sidharth 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3.

In the women’s singles, top seed M Arthi got a 3-0 lead in the 1st set but unseeded Ishwari came back strongly to level 4-4. Then, again both were tied 6-6 when Arthi took the first set in a tie-breaker 7-4. In the 2nd set, Arthi used her strong forehand drive to dominate and won the 2nd set without conceding a game 6-0. She will be facing last year’s defending champion and 3rd seed Anjali Thakur who played a marathon match against 6th seed Sahan Shetty. The match was played for 3 hours 5 minutes in which Anjali won 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. The final of the men’s singles and women’s singles will be held on Friday.
