Princy to play Priyanka for title

Princy Panchal overcame a resilient Sanya Chadha in three sets to set the title clash with Priyanka Jakhar in the girls’ U-16 category in the ongoing STA-AITA Talent Series (TS-7) Tennis Tournament at the Chandigarh Club, Sector 1, here today.  

Princy won the opening set 6-3, but Sanya came back strongly to level the scores with a 6-2 win in the second set. Princy, however, regained her composure in the decider to beat her opponent 6-2 to ensure a place in the final.

Priyanka, on the other hand, had an easy outing against Simran Pritam, winning 6-3 6-2 in less than an hour. 

Ajay Singh, meanwhile, continued his rich vein of form as he drubbed Sidharth Goel 6-4 6-1 to enter the boys’ U-14 final.

In the final, Ajay will play Sukhpreet Singh Jhoje, who humbled Gaurav Kumar 6-2 6-0.

In the boys’ U-16 semifinals, Asav Kumar made Shrut Mohan sweat before he threw in the towel. 

Asav won the first 6-3 but Shrut rallied to draw parity after winning the closely fought second set in the tie-break 7-6(3). He, however, dominated Asav in the final set (6-0) to make a move into the final where he will meet Uddayvir Singh. 

Uddayvir registered a comfortable 6-1 6-3 win against Gurustat Singh.

Nimrat Kaur Atwal was stretched to three sets by Mehar Kohli before she sealed a spot in the final with a 6-4 4-6 6-1 win. 

Nimrat will play Suryanshi Tanwar, who got the better of Vainavi Thapilya in another semifinal (6-1 6-0)

Earlier, Nimrat beat Aditi Singh 6-3 6-2 in the quarterfinals, while Suryanshi drubbed Mrinalini Sharma 6-2 6-0. Mehar had overcome Riya Kaushik 6-4 4-6 6-2 and Vainavi humbled Jyotsana Yadav 6-2 6-2.  

In the boys’ U-16 doubles, Abhay Mohan and Uddayvir Singh overcame Asav Kumar and Shrut Mohan 7-5 4-6 10-8 to book a berth in the final.
