Chandigarh, April 17
Ravibir Singh Grewal was elected as the president of the Chandigarh Golf Club (CGC) after he beat Ravinder Singh Virk by 94 votes here today.
Grewal, who took over the reins of the club after the death of former president IPS Mann last year, secured 589 votes in comparison to Virk’s 495. A total of 1,137 voters had cast their vote on Sunday.
“It’s our work that made the members vote us to power. We will continue to work towards making the club one of the best places for golf,” said an elated Grewal.
“We will make sure that the members enjoy golfing activity throughout the year. Our main focus will be to improve the golf course and provide the best facilities to our members,” Grewal said after the victory.
He further said the club had great facilities for the juniors and his team would work towards further improving them.
Grewal also said they would settle the lease issue with the UT Administration. “Another important work, we will surely close the lease issue with the Chandigarh Administration in this term,” he said.
Meanwhile, the results for the 11-member executive committee were declared later in the evening. Out of the 20 contestants, 11 were elected to the committee, known as the team of the president.
Soon after the announcement of results, a meeting of the newly-elected members was held at the Chandigarh Golf Club.
“We have been elected to the office with such a large mandate… it’s an honour for us. We will try to achieve the best for the club members. The maintenance of the course will be of paramount importance and our team will work for it with all the motivation,” said Rohit Singh Dagar.
Kulbir Singh Brar said: “We will put a system in place, so that in future things could not be tampered with. We have been elected to make this beautiful place more attractive and we will continue our work with no hidden agendas.”
Alamgir Singh Grewal, meanwhile, said the group had been working for the betterment of the club and it would continue the good work.
“We will be working for the betterment of the golf club. Last year, we did many good things for improving the facilities; our team will continue the good work. We will also focus on improving the facilities for junior golfers,” he said.
Virk, who was earlier critical of the functioning of the club under Ravibir Singh Grewal, meanwhile, congratulated his opponent and said he would extend all the support to the new president for the welfare of the club. “It was a close a fight. I wish Ravibir best of luck. I will continue to support him for the welfare of the club,” said Virk.
