Following in the footsteps of India ODI team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and U-19 T-20 World Cup captain Unmukt Chand, both hailing from the state, budding cricketer from Pithoragarh district Rishabh Pant has been named the captain of India Green for the U-19 Challenger Trophy, to be organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Pant, who plays for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy, has been selected for his consistent performance both with the bat and wicket keeping.
The U-19 Challenger Trophy will be held from October 28 to October 31 in Pune, Maharashtra. Rishabh’s elevation to captaincy assumes more significance as the BCCI selection committee will be selecting the U-19 World Cup team from this tournament only. The U-19 World Cup is scheduled in Bangladesh next year.
Rajendra Pant, father of Rishabh, said Rishabh’s success lay in his hard work and down to earth nature.
Haridwar-based Inder Mohan Barthwal, who had trained Rishabh in his schooling days, said he had a knack to not repeat a mistake and he analysed technical aspects of the game immensely.
At Roorkee, where Rishabh’s family currently stays and where he is doing his schooling from St Gabriel’s, there is a sense of joy. City legislator Pradeep Batra said Rishabh would be felicitated on his return to the city after the tournament.
Haridwar Cricket Association president Neeraj Kumar, office bearers MP Verma, Pradeep Sharma, Sanjeev Gupta, Vikas Goyal, Parwinder Singh, Kamal Bahukhandi, Kuldeep Aswal, Anil Khurana, Lalit Sachdeva, Kishore, Devendra, Kamal Pant, Praveen Giri, Javed Nadeem, Chandra Mohan and another coach Avtar Singh congratulated Rishabh Pant on his captaincy.
