Sriram, Mitali become chess champs

Chandigarh, July 13

Top ranking players Sriram Jha and Mitali Thadani bagged the glittering trophy of the LIC North Zone Chess Championship that concluded at Hotel Parkview in Sector 24, recently.

Grandmaster Sriram Jha from Delhi secured 4.5 points to emerge the champion of the men’s category while Kirti Sharma of Jalandhar secured 4 points by defeating Amit Soni of Delhi, in the last round, to bag the runner-up spot.

In the women’s category, Mitali Thadani of Jaipur defeated Vandana Khurana of Jalandhar to win the top honour. She secured 5 points while Jyoti Mehra of Udaipur defeated Neetu Ahluwalia of Jaipur to bag the second place in the event. A total of 16 divisions from Delhi (3 divisions), Jaipur (2 divisions), Ajmer, Jodhpur, Karnal, Shimla, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Rohtak, Udaipur, Bikaner and Chandigarh participated in the event.

Top performers, including GM Sriram Jha, Kirti Sharma, RS Khalsa, Naveen Mathur (Men’s category) and Mitali Thadani, Nagarathna MS, Jyoti Mehra, Neetu Ahluwalia (Women’s category) have been selected for the All-India LIC Chess Championship 2015.

Final standing

Men’s category- 5 points: Sriram Jha; 4 points: Kirti Sharma; 3.5 points: RS Khalsa, Naveen Mathur, Mukesh Kumar, Vikas Gupta; 3 points: Sunil Bansal, Mahesh Monga, Suraj Prakash; 2.5 points: Amit Soni, Sanjeev Kumar; 2 points: KK Malhotra, Shamshad Bhatti, Vikas Thakur, Anurag Mishra, Giriraj Rathi; 1.5 points: DN Jangid; 1 point: Rakesh Kumar.

Women’s category- 5 points: Mitali Thadani; 4 points: Nagarathna MS, Jyoti Mehra; 3 points: Neetu Ahluwalia, Vandana Khurana, Ramandeep, Ritoo Anand; 2.5 points: Resham Dhanvaani; 2 points: Arti Kapoor, Ranu Chaturvedi, Poonam Sharma, Savinderjeet Kaur, Dimple Khatri; 1.5 points: Nisha Gupta; .5 point: Romill and Vandana Bajaj.
