Unseeded eves script major upsets

Unseeded female players continued to spread their magic today at the AITA National Ranking Rs 1 Lakh Tennis Championship for Men and Women on the courts of the CLTA Complex in Sector 10 here.

In the pre-quarters (women), unseeded Harsimran Kaur upset fifth seed Sachi Belwal in a closely contested match. Kaur overpowered her rival 7-5 in the opening set. In the next set, she exhibited her tennis prowess to win the set 6-4.

In another match, unseeded Seerat Pannua outclassed seventh seed Tanasha Khandpur. In a long rallied match, Tanasha after going down 4-6 in the first set bounced back strongly to post back-to-back 6-3 win to claim the match.

Another unseeded player Jannat Kaur defeated eighth seed Omlata Rai, 7-6 (3) and 6-2.

On the contrary, all top seed players moved ahead in the boy’s quarter-finals by registering easy wins today. Top seed VM Ranjeet moved into the quarters with a straight convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory over Tejvir Singh Hara. Second seed Dalwinder Singh defeated Chinmay Dev Chauhan, 6-1 and 7-5. In another match, third seed Hardeep after losing the first set, 4-6, against unseeded Ankush, won the second 6-3.

The final set was tied at 6-6 but in the tie-breaker, Hardeep emerged winner at 8-6.

The quarter-final matches will be played on Wednesday.
