It all started way back in 2009 during the shoot of movie Kites. Hrithik's marriage was reportedly in trouble due to his relationship with Kites co-star, Barbara Mori. On the other hand, Kangana was going through problems of her own. That is when they both found solace in each other's company and became good friends.

Krrish 3 happened

It was Hrithik who wanted Kangana to do Krrish 3 but she was not comfortable. He pursued Kangana for almost six months and she agreed. It was then, when they both got into a relationship. Both none of them spoke about it in public as Hrithik had told Kangana that he would never divorce Sussanne.

When Hrithik decided to divorce Sussanne

Post Krrish 3, Kangana took a break and went alone to Milan. In December 2013, reportedly, Hrithik called her while she was in Milan and informed that he is divorcing Sussanne and wants to marry her. A source says, "Kangana was on top of the world at that moment."

The proposal

A source close to Kangana reveals that Hrithik proposed Kangana in January 2014. In his proposal this is what he said, "You may think this is coming out of a rebound. But I have no doubts about our future happiness because you are the only person who has never judged me. And I have felt a strong connection with you from day one." To this, Kangana said yes.

Then started the problem

As told by Kangana's friend, Hrithik stopped communicating with Kangana soon after he resumed shooting for Bang Bang. Kangana took off for a vacation in New York where she heard rumours about Hrithik's growing closeness with co-star Katrina Kaif. On Valentine's Day Hrithik called up Kangana and wanted to know if anyone was aware of their engagement. When Kangana told him that she had informed her family, he said that she had misunderstood his intentions. Kangana understood that this was going nowhere and tried to move on.

Kangana won everything with Queen

After Kangana won the National Award for Queen in March 2014, Hrithik called her and wanted her back. But, by that time, a young superstar had started wooing her after meeting her at an awards function. Kangana's friend says that Hrithik felt insecure and the final blow to their on-again, off-again relationship came in May 2014 at Karan Johar's party. Hrithik reacted angrily and Kangana kept wondering how Hrithik got to know about the date?

The email hacking

Kangana then realised Hrithik could have hacked into her email account. She then pointed out to Rangoli (Kangana's sister and manager) that some of her mails had disappeared.

Shaken up by this, she called up Rakesh Roshan and told him that if her suspicions were true, Hrithik could land into a lot of trouble for cyber crime, says Kangana's friend.

And the war began

Post that incident, life seemed normal. Hrithik got divorced and Kangana moved ahead in life. Early this year, they both came into limelight when stories of Hrithik asking T Series to drop Kangana out of contender's list for Aashiqui 3 came in. Reacting to it, Kangana tweeted saying, "... I don’t know why exes do silly things to get your attention...." To this Hrithik replied, " “There r more chances of me having had an affair with d Pope dan any of d (Im sure wonderful) women d media has been naming..." And then started a war in public domain.

The legal notices

Reportedly, Hrithik slammed a five page legal notice on Kangana, accusing her of defaming him. In response to it, Kangana lambasted the actor and sent him a 21- page lawsuit, alleging that Hrithik is trying to blackmail her.

The final statements

On March 17 Hrithik issued a statement saying, "Anything private that becomes public gives rise to speculation and unnecessary controversies, simply because the general public is not privy to the whole truth. Out of respect for everyone involved, I followed the legal path to resolve the matter in question so as to keep it private. It was a breach of ethics to reveal the contents of a private legal notice. Dignified silence is dignified up to a point, but there comes a time when the silence needs to be broken to protect one’s name, family and image. The crux of the matter is that the email hroshan@email.com does not belong to me. I had filed a complaint in this regard with Mumbai Cyber Crime on December 12, 2014 when I learnt of this impersonator communicating with the said person. Kangana replied to this immediately through her lawyer Rizwan Siddiqui. The statement issued by her says, "Mr. Hrithik’s statements made to the media are nothing but efforts to gain public sympathy. He cannot wash his hands of the matter now after having criminally threatened my client and having intimidated her without any provocation. He also cannot deny the fact that my client never named him anywhere, and it was he himself who claimed to be the ‘silly ex’ in his notice.
