The Sikh community in the Scottish town of Irvine has submitted a proposal to build a new gurdwara, according to a media report.

North Ayrshire Council last week received proposals to construct a gurdwara to the north of George Court.

The new gurdwara would be built just yards from the Guru Nanak Gurdwara on Bank Street, which is currently Ayrshire's only Sikh temple, the 'Irvine Times' reported.

The site identified for the new temple is on vacant land, north to the current block of flats in the area.

If approved, the building would be fitted with a meeting hall, offices, a classroom, kitchen and dining hall on the ground and first floors.

The main prayer hall and rooms would be included on the second floor. It remains unclear whether the gudrwara on Bank Street would close to be replaced by the newer and bigger building.

The council will now consider the application on its merits and unless there are any major objections, building work will be given the go-ahead. PTI
