The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Students’ Union today strongly condemned the appointment of Muzaffarnagar riot accused BJP MP Kunwar Bharatendra Singh to the AMU court, the highest governing body of the university.
A press release termed the decision a “slap on the face of the AMU fraternity”. “This step has been taken with the sole purpose of creating communal tension in AMU and disturbing our academic atmosphere,” the statement said.
“The AMU students’ union believes that this issue is not limited to AMU, but is a challenge for everyone concerned about higher education in India.” Besides Singh, the students’ union also decried the appointment of two more BJP MPs – Aligarh MP Satish Kumar Gautam and Etah representative Rajveer Singh.
“They all have a proven track record of playing the politics of hate and division. We shall not allow the divisive agenda of communal fascists to prevail,” the statement said.
On January 14, the union Human Resource and Development Ministry had communicated the appointment of six MPs to the AMU court. Those appointed include Bijnor MP Kunwar Bharatendra, Aligarh MP Satish Kumar Gautam and Patna MP Chaudhary Mehboob Ali Kaiser.
