Students protest fee hike

Jagraon, April 1

Students of Lajpat Rai DAV College today carried out a protest rally against fee hike by Panjab University, Chandigarh, and Punjabi University, Patiala.

The protesting students first carried out a rally and then burnt effigy of Panjab University in front of the main gate of their college. They also raised slogans against Panjab University and Punjabi University and demanded roll back of the fee hike decision. 

While addressing the students, Punjab Students Union (PSU) state finance secretary Karamjit Singh said, “Panjab University has increased the college fees by 10 per cent while Punjabi University has increased it by 5 per

cent. Farmers, shopkeepers and government employees have been facing a tough time due to wrong government policies and increasing inflation. Therefore, hike in college fees by the universities is not acceptable.”

Punjab Students UnionTehsil Committee president Mandeep Singh said on one hand the Centre has been privatising the education sector and on the other side it has deducted grants given to the universities. The students also appealed to the Human Resource and Development Ministry to release the grants to the universities.

The protesting students also condemned the entry of the police in the colleges and universities.
