A 22-year-old Thapar University student on Monday allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Bhakra canal here. According to Thapar University officials, the girl left the campus at 6 am. Her body was found by divers from the canal on the Nabha road at about 7.30 am. The girl has been identified as Sumit Kaur.
The girl who hails from Swara village in Kharar was a fourth-year student of Bachelor of Technology (B Tech) at Thapar University. A number of cases of suicide and accidents by students of the university have been reported earlier. As per the police, an i-card of the university was found from the girl’s pocket. Police say the cause behind the incident is not yet clear after the preliminary investigation. Additional SHO Civil Lines, Karnail Singh, said: “The girl’s body was sent for post mortem today. We are currently unaware of the cause of the incident.” The police have registered a case under section 174 (police to investigate and report) of the IPC.
When contacted Dr Maneek Kumar Dean Student Welfare (DSW) at Thapar University said: “We are currently unaware of why the incident took place. The student left the campus at 6, early morning today. She was a final year BTech student working on her project. We will look at her academic profile and talk to students.”
When questioned about the security protocol at the university he said: “The entry and exit of students from the campus is monitored. The students can go out for early-morning walks but they need special permissions to leave the campus in the evening hours.”
As per sources she was depressed as she was not placed in any company, while her friends were already placed. Saurav Jindal, DSP City-1 said, “The girl hails from village Swara in Kharar. Her father is a farmer by profession. We have retained footage from the University and will shortly receive her call details as well.”

Feb 25, 2017: Three students of the university were killed, while another another was critically injured in a car accident near the Dhindsa petrol pump on the Bhadson road.
September 12, 2016: Anmol Rai, a second-year student of the university, fell into Bhakra Canal, along the Nabha road, and drowned. He had gone there with his classmates.
October 20, 2011: A computer engineering student, Jaspreet Singh, was stabbed to death by a fellow student after a spat.
September 27, 2010: A management student Gagandeep Singh Bains and his friend Gaurav Verma were killed when their SUV crashed into a truck in Rajpura
