SANJIVA REDDY TO BE CONGRESS NOMINEE
BANGALORE, July 12 (UNI & PTI)—The Congress Central Parliamentary Board decided by a majority of four votes to two to put up Speaker N. Sanjiva Reddy as the party’s nominee for the Presidentship of the country. This was one of the rare occasions in the Board’s history when voting had to be resorted to on an important issue because of a failure to arrive at a consensus. It was one of the few occasions when the Prime Minister had been outvoted in a major party forum. Observers, however, noted that Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru had been outvoted in much the same manner in 1957 when the sponsored Dr. S. Radhakrishnan’s candidature for the Presidency against Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Mrs. Gandhi is understood to have sponsored the candidature of Food Minister Jagjivan Ram which was not favoured by a majority.
