The Late Mr. Andrew Carnegie

MR Andrew Carnegie whose death was announced the other day was born in Dunferline, Scotland, 84 years ago, on November 15th, 1835. At the age of 13 he went over with his family to America and took up work as a weaver’s assistant in a cotton factory at Allegheny, Pennsylvania. From these humble conditions, unequipped with education, unaided by any but the humblest of means, the boy Andrew was to fight through to victory. But victory was not yet. Andrew continued in his capacity as a weaver’s assistant for a few years and later took up an engagement as a telegraph messenger boy in the Pittsburg office of the Ohio Telegraph Company. He later learned telegraphy and became an operator, joined a railroad company in this capacity and by steady promotion attained the position of divisional superintendent.
