AS will be seen from a telegram published in another column, the preliminary conference of “moderates” held in the rooms of Indian Association, Calcutta on Friday last under the presidency of Sir Narayan Chandavarkar resolved by a majority of votes that the party should abstain from the ensuing special session of the Congress and should hold a separate conference of their own. It does not appear that the conference was as representative of the moderate wing of the national party as it might have been. One misses familiar names, including some of the most distinguished leaders to whom invitation had been issued. Even those present were clearly not of the same mind. A very sensible amendment was moved by Mr. Ramchandra Rao and seconded by Sir Rash Behari Ghosh to the effect that the Reception Committee of the forthcoming Congress be requested to postpone the session till the middle of September to enable the leaders of the two parties to come to a settlement, but it was lost.
