PROF. Macdonnell, the well-known Sanskritist of Oxford, made a few interesting suggestions recently regarding the encouragement of the study of Sanskrit by Englishmen. He himself was chosen to be a soldier had it not been for some chance which sent him to Germany to study comparative philology and Sanskrit. Prof Macdonnell has directed Sanskrit studies at Oxford for 28 years. He said he had resolved to devote the rest of his life to translating into English the Rig Veda as there was no scientific translation of this important work, the German translation being 40 years old.
