"A DITCHER" who publishes his weekly dairy in Capital lately had another occasion to bemoan the "dethronement of Calcutta, and that was the unveiling of Lord Curzon's statue presented to the Victoria Memorial by Sir P.D. Pattani. He wrote: "It were the veriest affectation to pretend that the Victoria Memorial now holds same place in the imagination of India as when Lord Curzon called for subscription. The shifting of the official capital to Delhi, for which a lesser Viceroy is responsible, has robbed the splendid monument of a great reign of its imperial significance and interest. When the Victoria Memorial is completed it will be as purely a local "sight" as the museum in Chowringhee, the Eden Gardens, the big banyan tree in the Botanical Gardens, and the smell of the Hooghly.
